When Thunder Bay Has Frosty Weather

By Graham Saunders, Wilderness North Meteorologist

For the last 60 days our winter has been surprisingly cold and snowy. In 1956, the record low temperatures and snowfall set an all-time weather statics record. While neither January or February reached those record setting numbers. They really came close.

March is finally here and our back-to-back exposure to Alberta Clippers” will probably be broken and with our sun higher in the sky our temperatures should moderate to average levels.

Thunder Bay typically has 203 days a year when the minimum temperature is at 0 °C or below. The average date for the last frost in spring is May 30. Frost normally returns here on September 19. The frost-free period extends for 111 days on average between the final spring frost and the first fall frost.
