The Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Beacon Lighting at Split Rock Lighthouse commemorates the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald and the loss of its 29 crew members on November 10, 1975. The lighthouse, fog signal building and visitor center will be open. Costumed guides will greet visitors and provide historic site and shipwreck information. A film about the Fitzgerald will be shown in the visitor center. At 4:30 p.m., the lighthouse will close temporarily while the names of the crew members are read to the tolling of a ship’s bell. Afterward, the beacon is lit and the tower is again open to tour. This is the only opportunity each year when visitors can climb the tower after dark and see the lit beacon.
For those interested in making a narrated trip from Duluth to Split Rock on the 10th, The Duluth Experience is offering a special Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Bus Tour that will include buffet dinner by the Vanilla Bean and Castle Danger beer in Two Harbors. Leaving from and returning to the DeWitt-Seitz Building in Canal Park. Limited to 14 people, but a few are seats still open as of today.
