Gift Guide for Anglers: Top Gear Picks for 2025

When it comes to fishing gear, who better to research the latest and greatest than someone who’s spent their life surrounded by rods, reels, and fish tales? I’ve spent 22 years growing up at lodges and seaplane bases—making camp memories and occasionally dropping a line myself. Admittedly, I’m no expert angler (though I’m getting better at spotting one! 😉), but I’ve taken on the challenge of finding the must-have gear for the 2025 fishing season. In fact, I will be purchasing this Shimano reel for myself this summer!

While my choices may not be the advice of a seasoned pro, I’ve tried to find items that are practical, travel-friendly, and hopefully useful as last-minute Christmas gift ideas for the angler in your life. Let me know what you think—I’ll be in the office manning the phones this winter, helping guests plan their next great adventure.

1. Travel-Friendly Rod: Ugly Stik GX2
This rod is a favorite for good reason. Available in multiple lengths and strengths, the Ugly Stik GX2 combines exceptional durability with versatility. It even comes with a long factory warranty, giving anglers peace of mind. Just remember to pack it in a rod case for your next floatplane trip—your fishing gear will thank you! I own one of these, what can I say- it works!

2. Reel: Shimano Stradic FM Spinning Reel
Looking for a reel that punches above its weight class? The Shimano Stradic FM Spinning Reel has earned rave reviews for its smooth operation and reliability. It offers high-end features typically found in much pricier reels, making it a perfect choice for walleye fishing in Ontario’s pristine waters. I need a new reel, I am going to try one of these.

3. Multi-Tool: Leatherman Rebar
No fishing trip is complete without a trusty multi-tool, and the Leatherman Rebar checks all the boxes. With screwdrivers, pliers, cutters, and more, it’s a true jack-of-all-trades. Our own pilots swear by theirs for quick repairs at camps—and let’s face it, they’ve seen just about every situation imaginable.

4. Fishing Scissors: Gerber Neat Freak Scissors
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from working the docks at our lodges, it’s that the gear you pack can make or break your trip. Over the years, I’ve seen plenty of guests pulling out scissors to handle everything from cutting line to opening snack bags. I’ve heard countless times how handy a good pair is in a boat. The Gerber Neat Freak Scissors are a perfect example—they’re sharp, durable, and versatile, making them a must-have addition to any tackle box.

5. Fillet Knife: Minnesota Fillet Knife Company’s Classic Knife
For knife enthusiasts, this handmade fillet knife is as beautiful as it is functional. With a sharp blade and a stunning wooden handle, it’s a true standout. I know Mom is a fan of their smaller panfish series, she believes it is the perfect size and precision for delicate filleting tasks.

6. Dry Bag: Ortlieb Dry Bag
-Keeping your gear dry is a must on rainy days or during rough waters. After running the dock for many years at Striker’s, I know the importance of keeping your gear dry. I think the Ortlieb Dry Bag delivers. Affordable, available in various sizes and colors, and highly dependable, it’s a simple yet essential addition to any angler’s packing list.

Whether you’re gearing up for your next fly-in fishing adventure or looking for a thoughtful gift, these items are sure to make any angler’s life easier (and more fun). Tight lines and happy gifting!
