Leaving the airport:

  • Thunder Bay Base: Head out of the airport and turn left at the lights onto Provincial Hwy 61. Hwy 61 becomes Trans-Canada Hwy 11/17, which skirts around Thunder Bay. Exit right onto Hodder Avenue. Head down Hodder and turn left at the first set of lights onto Grenville Ave. Go under the overpass and follow the signs directing you to Wilderness North … turn right into Wilderness North, 531 Shipyard Drive.
  • For Armstrong: Continue on Trans-Canada Hwy 11/17 and take the Armstrong exit, turning left onto Hwy 527. Enjoy the leisurely drive north as the city disappears. Near Armstrong watch for signs and turn right onto McKenzie Lake Road. Stay left as the road forks, follow it to the end (260km/161mi).
  • For Nakina: Continue on Trans-Canada Hwy 11/17 heading towards Nipigon. Just past Nipigon exit left onto Hwy 11, towards Geraldton, and enjoy a beautiful drive through the Canadian Shield. Turn right onto Hwy 584 and head north to the end of the road. Turn left onto Keefer Street and follow signs for R&D apartments (348km/216mi).

From the southeast: Take the I75 North to Sault Ste Marie, Michigan crossing the border into
Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. Travel the beautiful north shore of Lake Superior on Trans-Canada Hwy 17 West through Wawa, Marathon, and Nipigon.

  • Thunder Bay Base: Take the Hodder Avenue exit just past the Terry Fox Monument. Head down Hodder and turn left at the first set of lights onto Grenville Ave. Go under the overpass and follow the signs directing you to Wilderness North (approx. 435 miles or 700 kilometres).
  • For Armstrong: Follow Trans-Canada Hwy 11/17 west past Nipigon and take the Armstrong exit, turning right onto Hwy 527. KOA Campgrounds is on the left. Enjoy a leisurely drive north as you watch out for wildlife. Near Armstrong watch for signs and turn right onto McKenzie Lake Road. Stay left as the road forks, follow it to the end (922km/573mi).
  • For Nakina: Follow Trans-Canada Hwy 17 heading towards Nipigon. Just before Nipigon exit right onto Hwy 11 and enjoy a beautiful drive through the Canadian Shield. Turn left onto Hwy 584, towards Geraldton, and head north to the end of the road. Turn left onto Keefer Street and follow signs for R&D apartments (819km/509mi).

From the southwest: From Minneapolis/St.Paul take the I35 to MN 61 North. Travel through Duluth, Grand Marais, and Grand Portage crossing the border at Pigeon River (approx. 483km/300 mi). MN 61 becomes Provincial Hwy 61. Another 75km/47 mi gets you to the Thunder Bay airport where Hwy 61 becomes Trans-Canada Hwy 11/17, which skirts around Thunder Bay. Exit right onto Hodder Avenue. Head down Hodder and turn left at the first set of lights onto Grenville Ave. Go under the overpass and follow the signs directing you to Wilderness North, turn right into Wilderness North, 531 Shipyard Dr.

  • For Armstrong: Continue on Trans-Canada Hwy 11/17 and take the Armstrong exit, turning right onto Hwy 527. Enjoy the leisurely drive north as the city disappears. Near Armstrong watch for signs and turn right onto McKenzie Lake Road. Stay left as the road forks, follow it to the end (800km/497mi).
  • For Nakina: Continue on Trans-Canada Hwy 11/17 heading towards Nipigon. Just past Nipigon exit left onto Hwy 11 and enjoy a beautiful drive through the Canadian Shield. Turn left onto Hwy 584, towards Geraldton, and head north to the end of the road. Turn left onto Keefer Street and follow signs for R&D apartments (891km/554mi).
