Well maybe in song…but not for the Samuel Risley.
Named after the first maritime inspector back in the 19th century, this 230 foot long 3200 ton Canadian Coast Guard ice breaker is in Thunder Bay – clearing paths for the big lakers to get into port.
We see her outside our windows here at the home offices nearly every day now. She is dispatched where ever shipping lanes need to be clear of ice. She uses that big crane to place and maintain buoys throughout lake Superior.
Unlike like the U.S. Coast Guard, the 22 crew members on the Samuel Risley are not military personnel, but are employed by Fisheries and Ocean of Canada. – Click Here for more information and photos.
