First Ship in Thunder Bay

The Marshall Islands-registered M.V. Federal Cedar is the first ocean-going ‘Salty’ vessel to enter the Port of Thunder Bay during the 2021 navigation season. 

The Port of Thunder Bay authority said the vessel berthed at the Richardson International Main Elevator on April 4, the earliest opening to saltwater vessel traffic at the port in five years. 

The vessel loaded 12,000 tonnes of Canada Western Red Spring Wheat destined for Puerto Rico. 

Federal Cedar Captain Pradeep Dattajirao Nalawade and Chief Engineer Kalyan Kumar Roy earned the Top Hat honours for 2021 given to saltwater vessels. 

No ceremony was held due to pandemic protocol. The vessels is owned and operated by Fednav of Montreal. 

The Lake Superior port officially opened for navigation on March 26 with the arrival of McKeil Marine’s tug Sharon 1 and barge Huron Spirit.
