At Makokibatan Lake, it’s the big opening of the season. The warm wind is blowing, the sun is glistening off the lake, and the fish are going wild for the bait! It’s the end of May and its prime time for any fishing enthusiasts at the lodge where the food is fresh -including cooked fish straight out of the water. The gas tanks are full and so are the bellies of eager fisherman. With packed lunches and gear it tow, they’re set for long days and big catches!
Our first, reel happy guests jumped off the plane with smiles and a positive attitude – ready for an ecstatic, memorable time. With six guests in total, there are sure to be some future Master Anglers from the group! The group consists of Dan and the boys from Powell Ohio, along with Bob Tweedy and Tom Hickey – the curious and adventurous duo who make sure to get the most out of a tank of gas. The smiles kept up as several large trophies were reeled into the boat within the first three days of casting!
This week’s Master Anglers are:
The Hiestand’s with a pair of 26in walleye.
David landed a 26.5in walleye topped by a 41in pike he caught late yesterday.
Rounding out the group is Shawn with three trophy walleye at 26in, 26.5in, and 27in.
For those looking for the inside scoop on reeling in trophies of your own: The word on the water from Dan and the boys is “Walleye Alley”. This hotspot is stacked with some great action packed catching, its serious business out there folks. When you’re sitting on top of some hot fishing the last thing you want to do is book it back to the lodge. Thankfully when your belly grumbles reminding you its lunch time, hungry anglers can take the short hop over to Shore Lunch Island. This is the place where good laughs and great food is often made and shared. “Dan and the boys” couldn’t get enough of the outdoor kitchen with deep fried potatoes and fish cooked on the open range and indulging on freshly baked cookies (debatably the best part!)
Not wanting the good times to come to an end, its early mornings and late nights for the anglers at Makokibatan Lodge. Great stories, happy guests, and fantastic trophy catches help get the season off to a great start. This is just the beginning of what’s sure to be a fantastic season so stay tuned for more fishing reports. From all of us here at Wilderness North, we wish all our guests tight lines and a unforgettable wilderness experience.
